Refined and Extraordinary Beauty

“Elegance is when the inside is as beautiful as the outside.”

Chanel

  1. The word “elegant” has been a favorite of mine since a few years after I was married.  I think it comes from the one I loved getting increasingly more raunchy in the clothes he was buying for me to wear.  I dress modestly and wearing what he was buying me was getting harder and harder.  If I didn’t wear them, it was very unpleasant.  The movie “Pretty Woman” is a great example of this sentiment.  Edward tells Vivian he wants her to buy some clothes (she’s a prostitute he has hired for the week to accompany him to his business events).  He tells her to not get anything too flashy or sexy.  He says to get something conservative.  She answers back “boring” and he replies with the word “elegant”.  I love that scene.
  2. I never really thought about elegance being anything about how you are on the inside, but it has to be on the inside as well.  You can have on the most beautiful dress in the world, but if you act crudely or rudely the elegance is gone.  I know some women who are very rich and dressed to the hilt, but they look down on others with their noses in the air.  There is nothing elegant to be found in this behavior.
  3. In the same vein, you can be wearing cutoff shorts and a t-shirt and still be elegant. Elegance remains no matter what you’re wearing if you keep your character in tact.
  4. Every woman deserves to be treated like she is dressed in elegance no matter what she is wearing.  The one I loved told me very early on in our marriage that he would only open doors for me if I was wearing a dress or skirt.  Wow!  That still hurts.  What someone is wearing has nothing to do with their worth.
  5. I would say the masculine word for elegant is gallant.  I have seen guys in the sweatiest clothes ever who were gallant in their behavior.  Again, it’s about what’s on the inside.
  6. The word elegant, for me, has always meant extraordinary, refined beauty.  That is definitely the kind of person I want to be.  I can’t do much about how I look on the outside, but I can continue to build character and grace.

  1. I’m sure your beautiful on the outside as well. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. I feel the same way about myself but I try to remember that God made me perfectly in His image, so I have to be beautiful in some way!

  2. the elegance born from our inside and is very important for me….
