The Facade

“We killed the facades, we feel free to fly.”

Kendrick Lamar

  1. I will start by saying I’m not a fan of the quoted’s music, but I love this quote.
  2. Facades, appearances and pretense only puts us in chains.  There is no freedom when you are constantly trying to be what and who you think those you are with expect from you.
  3. On that note, you will rarely know what others expect from you.  Even if they tell you, it’s not necessarily all they expect.
  4. Living with the façade created for others is like putting on a character, just like clothes, every time you go out.  That, in itself, is rough enough, but then remembering what each character said or did is impossible.  Your life will become full of inconsistencies you will never be able to sort through.
  5. The more you become a different person in situations, you begin to disappear.  You forget how to just be and what you would normally do. Even your likes and dislikes change to what others like and dislike instead.
  6. Living for appearances not only locks you in chains, but it also hurts those close to you.   You will come to expect others to fit into the façade, but they don’t know the rules.  From my experiences, this leads to a lot of hurtful comments and a severing, to at least some degree, of the relationship.
  7. Only by being yourself, in every situation, will you ever be able to fully experience your life and be the person God made you to be.  You can still grow  as a person.  In doing this, you only become a better version yourself, but you’re still very much yourself.
