You're Ordinary

You’re Ordinary

“Never love anybody who treats you like you’re ordinary.”

                                                  Oscar Wilde

You're Ordinary

You’re Not Ordinary

  1. Dictionary.com defines ordinary as ‘of no special quality or interest; commonplace, unexceptional’.  Not one person fits this description and should never be told or treated like ‘you’re ordinary’.
  2. God makes it completely clear that we are a masterpiece made by Him.  “For we are God’s masterpiece.  He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago.”  Ephesians 2:10 (NLT)
  3. It is a goal of mine to speak this truth into the lives of those in my life as well as those who read my writings and to whom I speak.
  4. I believe we should instill this fact into the lives of our children.  Not just to tell them that they are extraordinary but that others are special as well.  When someone grows up being told they are all that, they become an “all about me” person.  This breeds treating others as if they are less than.
  5. For some of us, being treated like we were ordinary would have been a gift.
  6. One of the counselors I saw once told me that I was probably able to survive all the hardships and abuse in adulthood because of how I had learned to identify myself.  I told her that maybe I would have made different choices and not been with the people who continued telling me and treating me like “you’re ordinary”. If I had been taught I was of value, I would have taken the things said to me and would have walked away before a relationship formed.
  7. This quote is supportive of what I wrote in my last post “Living Defensively”.  To love somebody who doesn’t see your value leaves you feeling stupid for ever letting them into your heart.  Love should never make you feel this way.
  8. I met a couple of friends for lunch today and one of them was telling how she and her husband met with their eldest daughter’s boyfriend to tell him how precious their daughter is.  They made sure he understood how they expected him to treat her.  What an amazing gift they are giving their daughters to know their worth and to be sure anyone who dates them knows the same.

I pray we can all give this gift to not only our children, but to all with whom we come in contact.  Don’t ever tell someone, “You’re ordinary” or less than ordinary.  Let them know they are extraordinary, because they are.
